Our TOP 5 Ocean Liner Model Kits
“A Glorious Model Ship!”
Our Rating: 4.5
What better way to start off your list of the top ocean liner model kits around than by giving you this?
It is one of the most famous—or infamous— model ocean liner kits you could find.
This model cruise ship is perhaps the most recognizable seacraft in modern history, regardless of the circumstances that made it so.
Ladies and gents, this is the Cubic Fun RMS Titanic model kit, and it’s absolutely one of the best plastic models you could get right now.
So much so, that we’d even go so far as to say that this RMS Titanic is one of those museum quality model cruise ships.
Even if it’s only for its size alone.
This particular model is on par with the likes of Italian ocean liner handcrafted ship modelConte di Savoia or the White Star linesmodel ocean liner.
So, let’s check out what this baby has in store for you!
As far as ocean liner model kits go, this RMS Titanic fits the bill.
It also includes a bit of a twist to keep things fun: it’s also a 3D puzzle.
Think of it as a toy or collectible that’s similar to Legos.
Except you’re not exactly dealing with bricks, but more pronounced parts that make up the whole thing.
This model ocean liner comes in a nice four-color box not unlike Legos, too.
So storing this MISB (mint in sealed box) would be a huge misstep on your part.
Made to be Assembled
Ocean liner model kits like this demand to be opened and assembled in order for you to fully appreciate its glory.
The whole ship is made of 266 parts, which you’ll have to stick together in order to build the Titanic.
Unlike other ocean liner model kits though—especially those old wood models or model cruise ship kits—you won’t need any hobbyist’s glue to put this thing together.
Don’t Sink It
As far as difficulty level goes, this is something we would highly recommend if you’re already used to doing 3D puzzles.
Suffice it to say that this isn’t exactly meant as one of those starter sets for newbies, but it’s doable.
Once you’ve completed assembly, then prepare to marvel at the sheer size of this RMS Titanic model.
It stands at about 11 inches tall and 35 inches long.
That’s right: it’s 35 inches long—almost 3 FEET!
Rarely do ocean liner model kits come at this size.
And with some very fine details from prow to bow, you’re going to love everything about this set.
And the addition of a nice, sturdy stand for this model ocean liner is a nice touch that makes the whole package elegant.
Use Your Signals
But perhaps one of the most pleasantly unusual features of model cruise ship kits like this is the fact that it has light-up features.
And we’re not talking about something akin to the ones that you find on kids’ toys that Hasbro or Mattel produces.
The LEDs on this thing are placed within the interiors and bring the whole cruise liner to life once you turn it on.
No, this isn’t the kind that would make little boys and girls want to lift this thing and start swooshing it.
It’s more like a display centerpiece that would look perfect on top of your fireplace or inside a display case!
“A Tedious but Rewarding Toy!”
Our Rating: 4
Next up on our ocean liner model kits list is the same iconic ship—the RMS Titanic— but we decided to go the opposite way here.
Model cruise ship kits like the Cunard line ocean liner cruise ship or the SS Andrea Doria are all well and good.
But there’s just something unforgettable about the Titanic.
Maybe it’s because it’s one of the greatest nautical tragedies in the history of man, or maybe it’s because we just love Leonardo DiCaprio: we don’t know!
Seriously, though, this particular model is perfect for all ages and definitely passes off as an educational toy.
We’re talking about Darice’s handcrafted wooden ship model, which is one of the cutest and diorama-ready cruise linerscale figures you could add to your collection.
Wooden ships model like this are somewhat of a dying breed these days, what with the advent of 3D puzzles and all.
But creating model ships in this method never loses its appeal, no matter which generation you belong to.
As such, Darice is able to both give some nice nostalgic feels while providing you with a very nice miniature handcrafted wooden model ship based on the Titanic.
At about 7.25 inches x 2 inches, you could even use this when crafting your O scale diorama!
That said, what this model lacks in size, it more than makes up for in miniscule details.
So, what exactly will you be getting when you purchase ocean liner model kits like this?
DIY All Day!
Given that this is one of those wooden models, the whole package contains precut wooden pieces that make up the entirety of the ship.
Wood models—and this one’s no exception— come unpainted, so you’re going to need some as well from your local hobby shop.
Additionally, you don’t attach the precut wooden pieces through pegs or stack them up like Lego bricks
You’re also going to need some wood glue to assemble it.
And you can’t forget about the sandpaper to bevel and furnish the edges in order to make them all line up perfectly.
Sure, it might sound like a hassle, but keep in mind that we’re not talking about simple scale figures here.
This is a classic model ocean liner not unlike the ones made by Revell Germany.
So, yeah, we highly recommend this if you want to make an afternoon out of your collectibles and not just display them straight from the box.
“A Nice Lego Alternative!”
Our Rating: 4.5
Building toys are some of the most fun and rewarding collectibles you could find
This next entry to your ocean liner model kits list is something in that category.
This is the dOvOb micro mini blocks building set based on the Titanic yet again (hey, you can’t beat historical infamy)!
Queen Elizabeth would swoon with how nice this particular model cruise ship looks, and it’s also got one of the most affordable prices to boot.
A Lego Alternative
Granted, Lego purists might say that this is yet another rip-off of the brand.
But there are just some things that the #1 brick toy company don’t have.
For one, they don’t—and chances are slim that they will in the future— offer any official models based on the Titanic.
dOvOb does, though; so, say what you want.
This is one model ocean liner that might just be as good as Lego without the oftentimes steep price tags that come with those!
Iceberg Ahead, Captain!
The main draw of sets like thisis that you won’t have to subsist on ramen and saltines for the next three months just to buy it.
That’s true whether they’re ocean line model kits or otherwise.
But apart from that, you’d be mistaken to think that this is any less of a nice-looking cruise liner model.
Or that it lacks all the appeal of building toys.
For one, yes, for a “Lego rip-off”, this one looks great.
We’d even go so far as to say that this particular set reminds us of old school legos from the 80s and 90s.
Secondly, just because it doesn’t have the “Lego” name absolutely does not mean it doesn’t have the same qualities as a nice, relaxing, and even educational toy.
Of course, the materials used here are not as sturdy as the kind of ABS plastic Lego uses.
But that’s a small price to pay for a toy like this where you have to pay a really small amount of money.
And at 1872 pieces, yes, this is one large building kit!
Setting the Scene
What we here at Shrunk Collectibles find both hilarious and sad at the same time is how this particular model cruise ship even manages to recreate the iceberg.
We’re talking about the one that ultimately led to its demise (and the demise of hundreds of its passengers).
That itself gives this toy a bunch of novelty points.
The addition of a couple of minifigs on the ship’s prow, smiling at their impending doom via iceberg also adds another layer of hilarity to this set.
Decent Model Kit
Seriously, though, this is one more than decent model kit that you could have fun assembling.
It looks good and comes at a ridiculously affordable price tag.
That makes this one of the most attractive starter sets if you’re just getting into the brick toy or ocean liner model kits hobby.
So, yeah, we highly recommend you get this big baby right here if you’re a fan of model ships, building toys, or both!
“A Nice, Detailed Model Ship!”
Our Rating: 4.5
Now, we’re just cheating a little bit with this next entry to your top ocean liner model kits.
That’s because we’re not talking about a single particular cruise liner—be it the Cunard line ocean liner cruise ship or the Conte di Savoia.
Instead, we’re talking about a specific brand: Academy.
It is a company that produces some of the nicest miniature handcrafted wooden ship model sets you could find in the market right now.
Whether it’s the Queen Elizabeth, White Star lines, or an Italian ocean liner handcrafted ship model, Academy’s wood models are some of the nicest you could find.
In fact, Academy could even go toe to toe with Revell Germany’s products, which by the way is arguably the top ship model maker company right now.
Just to give you a taste, this particular entry contains their model for the Titanic, and they’re as nice as wooden models go.
Old School Hobby Time
This is a wooden ships model and not one of those modern plastic models you see on shelves usually.
So you’re going to need a whole lot of tools to assemble something like this.
That includes: paints, wood glue, and sandpaper, none of which are included in the set but could easily be purchased at your local hardware or hobby store.
However, you have to appreciate the fact that the wooden pieces found in this kit perfectly capture the sculpt of the Titanic.
And it’s all pretty much done in a 1:1000 scale.
As such, this particular model goes about 13.5 inches long and about 3 inches wide once you’ve assembled it: a very respectable size for a ship model.
A Perfect Mix
It may not be as big as those museum quality model cruise ships.
However, this Academy model—or any other Academy models for that matter— creates the perfect mix of design and display size.
Suffice it to say that it’s not a big problem trying to find the right spot for this wonderful ship.
Or all the other available models by this great company.
“A Large yet Lightweight Collectible!”
Our Rating: 4.5
To round up the best ocean liner model kits list we made for you, here’s the RMS Titanic from WiseStar.
And given that this is a WiseStar product, much like ones made by Cubic Fun, we’re talking about a model ship that’s also a 3D puzzle.
You’re going to love this particular model if you’re a fan of nice display pieces and building toys that you get to have a hand in assembling.
The company pulled out all the stops when they came out with this wonderful toy.
We’re sure you, your friends, and family are going to love putting it together and, ultimately, appreciate how it looks when you’re all done.
Affordable Price Tag
Its rather affordable price tag is just a bonus, because we really think that something of this caliber should be worth more.
Don’t tell them we said that, though, because we’re happy enough as it is with how it’s priced.
This is one of the larger models you could go for on this list.
It stands at about 32 inches long x 4 inches tall and about 9 inches wide.
It’s made of 116 3D puzzle pieces, so building this thing won’t take more than a couple of hours on average.
And once you’re done, you’re going to love how nicely detailed it is, as the company managed to print individual windows and portholes to the pieces.
However, it would have been even nicer if they sculpted these little details right into the pieces, but that would probably drive the price up.
About the Material
And speaking of the pieces, the company used a lightweight material that’s respectably sturdy.
So you won’t have to worry about accidentally breaking it if it falls to the floor or something.
They used a mix of paper and EPS foam.
That is durable enough to withstand some degree of damage in spite of looking just a tiny bit cheap and flimsy.
