“Great Value for Money!”
Our Rating: 4.5
As such, this particular Stars Wars chess set is a damn fine chess board you could get today.
It’s especially great if you’re both a fan of the rebels or the empire.
Battle with Your Favorite Characters
Scratch that, actually, because this chess board that features a license from Lucasfilm Ltd. would be perfect even if you just love playing the game.
But hey, there’s nothing better than having chess sets boards that feature your favorite characters from the Star Wars movies.
That’s miles better instead of just, you know, boring ol’ wooden chess sets, right?
So, let’s go ahead and look at this amazing Stars Wars chess set, and you just might get your game on with this wonderful game board!
This Star Wars chess game by Hasbro, simply speaking, is a classic chess board that’s been given the Star Wars editions treatment.
Don’t be surprised, though, since the company has already done this years ago with their Saga EditionStars Wars chess set.
This time, though, Hasbro decided to update their top chess pieces by spanning the whole Skywalker saga—from the Phantom Menace all the way to the Last Jedi.
It includes your favorite characters from the films.
This Stars Wars chess set comes in a wide box as befits chess sets boards, be it kids’ chess or otherwise.
It stands at about 16 inches x 11 inches x 2.5 inches.
Just by looking at the box, you could easily tell that Hasbro wasn’t fooling around when they decided to come out with this Stars Wars chess set.
Right out the gate, you’ll notice two window cutouts in front of the box, which feature rebel characters and imperial characters as its top chess pieces.
You’ll find that the whole package comes with the necessary pieces to play the game.
Much like any other checkers set or chess board available in the market today.
Specifically, you’re looking at a nice chess board along with 32 chess pieces affixed to the same number of bases (but we’ll get to that later).
On the back of the box, you’ll see the usual descriptions and photos of what you’re getting, which is not unlike how other Star Wars editions products go.
Visually Appealing Package
As far as the overall package goes, this gives you everything you need if you want to play the game.
Each piece represents some of your favorite characters from the sci-fi franchise.
Additionally, if you just want to purchase this in hopes of displaying it as MISB (mint in sealed box), you’re in luck.
We here at Shrunk Collectibles are glad to tell you that the box itself is visually appealing.
Those window cutouts give collectors just enough room to see the products they’re getting.
But come on: there’s nothing better than busting this baby open and setting it up!
This Stars Wars chess set comes with a hard game board made of stiff card material; it’s made of paper, to put it succinctly.
It has a glossy, water-resistant finish, which makes it pretty sturdy and would last you a long time if you give it just the right amount of care.
Just keep in mind: this is a water-resistant finish they put on the board, not waterproof.
That means you can’t simply submerge this thing in water and you should still wipe it right away if it gets wet.
Very Much Affordable
Still, for its price—which is very much affordable—, getting a glossy finish like this is a sweet bonus that Hasbro could have as easily done without.
So, plus points to the company for giving us mere earthlings some nice materials for this Stars Wars chess set.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a Stars Wars chess setwithout any of the nice brandings and design elements that you’d expect from Star Wars editions.
This Stars Wars chess set features the usual, classic black and white pattern as its main play area.
That is just a bit disappointing considering that the old Saga Edition at least had a silver and gray pattern.
Not to mention, that old Star Wars chess game by Hasbro even had semi-translucent brandings on it.
It featured insignias for the rebel characters and the imperial characters, respectively.
Light and Dark
However, unlike the Saga Edition, this Stars Wars chess set has design work on its borders that feature blue and red prints on each.
It consists of a bit of light side and dark side flavors in there.
Then, you’ll notice that the borders also feature thumbnails of the respective chess pieces.
That will help you organize your action figures/chess pieces when they get taken out of play.
Star Wars Logo
Finally, each end of this Stars Wars chess set features a banner print that features Kylo Ren and the Star Wars logo on them.
That is just a nice overall touch to tie the whole theme up.
But the real draw to this game set is its game pieces, which are some of the top chess pieces we’ve seen in this price range.
Ready for Battle
Each piece represents, of course, a certain role in the game like your kings, queens, and rooks, and they’re all done in wonderfully.
Instead of going the usual black and white, you get silver pieces and black pieces here.
That just looks fantastic and just a little bit premium in spite of the material used.
By default, the black pieces are meant to be placed on imperial characters, such as the Storm Troopers, Darth Vader and Boba Fett.
The silver pieces, on the other hand, are for rebel characters like Princess Leia, Rey, and Luke Skywalker.
And speaking of material, these are PVC pieces that stand anywhere between 3 to 5 inches tall depending on which of your favorite characters you’re looking at.
In fact, they’re so nicely done that they’re akin to action figures— minus the articulation, of course— right from the sculpt up to their respective colors.
There’s no denying that this is some of the top chess pieces you’ll see on Star Wars editions chess sets boards.
Whether you’re a fan of the rebels or the empire.
First off, the sculpt on (almost) each of your favorite characters featured here are nicely done, with a surprising amount of detail put on them.
However, don’t expect any paint variations—or for that matter, any paint job at all— from the characters in this Stars Wars chess set.
Instead of individually painting them, which would have driven up the price, Hasbro decided to just use colored PVC to make up their black pieces and silver pieces.
Although it would have been nice to have each piece individually painted, we were pleasantly surprised to find out how well these pieces turned out.
They don’t look like a bunch of cheap toy soldiers or kids’ chess pieces.
They have a rather premium finish to them in spite of the lack of a paint job.
Heroes and Villains
Like we said, the sculpt on these could rival those of Hasbro’s action figures, but not all of them share the same type of quality here.
On one hand, you have characters like Princess Leia, Darth Vader and Boba Fett.
They are each molded wonderfully with just enough detail to make them look more premium than they actually are.
In fact, we’d even go so far as to say that those characters look like they’re made of pewter or lead, given how they’re sculpted and molded.
On the other, though, a couple other characters suffer from problems that honestly aren’t that big of a deal.
But it would have been nice if they were done better.
First, there’s Darth Maul from the Phantom Menace and Kylo Ren, which come with bent lightsaber pieces.
It sucks, but it’s understandable that the materials will bend like that considering they’re made of PVC.
On the bright side, you could always do minor alterations to PVC with the help of a trusty hair dryer and just a tiny bit of patience.
Clone and Storm Troopers
Second, the clone trooper pieces look bland in comparison to the Storm Troopers.
Whereas the latter had some really nice detail work done to each and every one of them, the clone trooper pieces look very generic and flat.
We’re not sure if it’s just the overall design of the clone troopers themselves that make them look less than premium in this case.
Or maybe it’s because they’re silver pieces and that, combined with their design, makes them appear like they’re made of cheap rubber.
Not a Deal Breaker
In any case, it’s no deal breaker.
These clone trooper pieces in the set are still serviceable enough to belong to a Stars Wars chess set like this one.
Oh, and it would’ve been nice if Hasbro added Obiwan Kenobi as one of the characters in the set.
But they chose BB-8 and R2-D2 instead (that’s a miss).
Take the Base
Each of these top chess pieces comes with a base, and it’s another thing that we love from this game set.
For one, the bases are separated as either black piecesor gray ones, with the necessary chess piece designations printed on each of them.
Secondly, the bases aren’t just sorted by color, but they’re differentiated by the sculpt as well—yet another nice touch from Hasbro.
The black pieces are reminiscent of those sockets you usually see aboard starships from the franchise, while the gray bases resemble the end of a light saber more.
Finally, the character pieces are removable from their respective based AND interchangeable.
This is one of our favorite features from this Star Wars chess game by Hasbro.
That means you could switch rebel characters with imperial characters, or switch up each character’s piece designation.
On one hand, you’re going to love this set if you’re looking for a classic, no-frills game of chess.
It has just a hint of license from Lucasfilm Ltd. thrown into the mix.
There are no special rules here nor are there any special effects like lights, sounds, or power features.
So, don’t expect any glowing bits or proton torpedoes when you play with the top chess pieces of this Stars Wars chess set.
For Checkers Too
But, like any other chess board out there, this could also double as a checkers set with just a few tweaks in the game rules.
As such, playability on this thing is a given: it’s something that fans of Star Wars, chess, or both could enjoy.
It also has some wonderful display value, given how nicely sculpted most of the pieces in this set are.
Star Wars is a sci-fi franchise created by Lucasfilm.
It started off as a single movie way back in 1977 and eventually became one of the most beloved pop culture franchises to this day.
With a bevy of films, TV series, books, comics, and merchandise, the franchise features some of the most memorable characters to have ever graced pop culture.
Whether it’s Princess Leia, the Storm Troopers, Obiwan Kenobi, Darth Vader and Boba Fett, Star Wars has—and continues—to entertain fans all over the world.
The franchise dazzles us with its amazing characters and the products they’re featured in.
Phantom Menace to The Force Awakens
This particular Stars Wars chess set covers the period from the Phantom Menace and right up until around The Force Awakens.
In a nutshell, you could say that this particular game set is a fitting tribute to this iconic franchise and a wonderful addition to any fan’s collection.
Hasbro is the world’s largest toy manufacturer, with licenses from various media franchises like Star Wars, My Little Pony, Marvel Comics, and the Transformers.
They produce a wide range of products, which include action figures of varying degrees of quality.
It ranges from their 3.75” line to their more detailed and larger Star Wars Black Series and Marvel Legends lines (which stand around 6 inches tall).
In addition, they have a dedicated department for board and tabletop games known as Hasbro Gaming to which this chess board belongs.
Hasbro is showing no signs of slowing down.
They keep coming out with some of the most popular toy lines featuring some of your favorite characters from different franchises.
Stars Wars Chess Set Verdict!
This particular game set comes with a very reasonable price tag that gives you a whole lot of bang for your buck.
In addition, the overall quality of the pieces found in this package go well above what you’d expect from this tier of toy or collectible.
Agreed, it has a couple of very minor and totally fixable flaws, like Darth Maul’s lightsaber or the Clone Trooper pieces’ designs.
Nonetheless, this Stars Wars chess set is something you should definitely add to your collection!
